Nueltin Wins Sustainable Tourism Award

Sustainable Tourism is an issue receiving more and more attention across Canada. It is defined as tourism that actively fosters appreciation and stewardship of the natural, cultural and historic resources and special places by local residents, the tourism industry, governments and visitors. It is tourism which can be sustained over the long term because it results in a net benefit for the social, economic, natural and cultural environments of the area in which it takes place.

This award recognizes excellence in the delivery of a product or service that effectively demonstrates sustainable tourism practices.

Nueltin Fly-in Lodges is a premium fishing and hunting outfitting company offering unique and traditional resource based experiences in a pristine wilderness area in Manitoba. Nueltin was the first area to use single barbless hooks and to institute a catch and release policy. Nueltin also shortened its season to minimize the effects on spawning patterns and worked with the Manitoba government and First Nations to declare Nueltin Lake as a protected area.

Father and son owners, Shawn and Garry Gurke have been very active in Fish Futures and the Provincial Rod and Reel program that provides rods and reels to youth in First Nations communities throughout Manitoba. Over the past five years over 7,000 fishing rods have been provided to school children along with a presentation on proper fishing and catch and release techniques. Nueltin has also worked with “Fishing for Life” to help inner-city children learn about angling and provide them with the opportunity to experience some time on the water.
